Recurrent assistance

Drydocks World is an internationally renowned provider of maritime and off- shore services to the shipping, oil, gas and energy sector. Its facilities in the Dubai Port offers the largest operation shipyard in the Middle-East.

In the last years, they required Sixense assistance on different projects. Several months after a first successful project, in 2013, Drydocks World appointed Sixense to implement and maintain an automated monitoring system during the construction and load-out of a very heavy multi-module LNG turret.

One Cyclops (Robotic Total Station) and 3 datalogged tiltmeters were installed to provide continuous monitoring of the quay deformations, in order to allow the project consultant to assess its behavior prior to reaching the critical phase of the loading out and thus confirming its design assumptions.

In summer 2015, when the turret was moved from the berth to the barge crossing the quay wall, Sixense’s onsite attendance was requested to help to ensure the safety of the operation.
In early 2016, they once more requested our assistance to carry out strain measurement on the closing gate of a dry-dock. Sixense performed the installation of 12 strain gauges on 6 out of the 30 struts of the 17m high and 100m long dry-dock gate.

The strain gauges were manually read during the commissioning of the dry-dock gate, with readings being taken throughout the tidal range and during the testing (opening and closing) of the gates. This survey enabled Drydocks World to ensure the design parameters are correct and to assess their safety margins.
