KAAR Urban Development Project:

The King Abdul Aziz Road (KAAR) project is located in the Holy City of Makkah, at the heart of the Islamic culture and its religion. The project comprises over 1.2 million square metres of new development articulated by a central pedestrian boulevard leading to Al Haram Mosque.

The new KAAR development is a signature urban development project providing connectivity to the Al Haram along a Grand Pedestrian Boulevard, flanked by hotels, commercial and retail facilities, residential buildings, car parks, public spaces and public amenities to support religious, social and commercial activities to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and other visitors and local residents.

This mega project is constructed above a 3km tunnel and 2 main metro stations forming part of the future network of the Makkah Metro.

Sixense Structural Health Monitoring Solution:

Sixense is contracted for a multi-year contract to provide Instrumentation & Monitoring services for the tunnels and metro stations during the cast-in-place construction and provide an assessment of the effects that backfilling above those structures will have.

The scope of works consists of the supply, installation, commissioning and operation of the Structural Health Monitoring system, composed of the following methods/instruments:

  • CYCLOPS : Automated Total Stations + Optical prisms to monitor tunnel
    convergence during backfilling works

  • Datalogged Strain Gauges in tunnels segments and station concrete
    structural elements

  • Datalogged Tiltmeters for tunnel walls inclination measurement

  • Data Acquisition Nodes, to automatically get real-time data along the
    project
