The SHM system on Rion Antirion Bridge celebrates its 15 years' in operation
Rion – Antirion, GRECE
The SHM, Structural Health Monitoring System, was designed and installed by SIXENSE when the bridge was built. It has been used and operated ever since by the concession holder GEFYRA to understand the bridge’s behaviour, to demonstrate its structural integrity and to supply indicators concerning its condition, particularly after exceptional events such as earthquakes or gale-force winds.

DigitalSite deployed to follow work on future Saint-Gobain headquarters

In order to create this 165-metre-high glass tower made of three overlapping prisms, BIM (Building Information Modeling) was used from design onwards.
Its advantages? Optimised construction and maintenance in a high-density urban environment.
Furthermore, teams from SIXENSE Digital deployed all the modules available through the DigitalSite tool: from documentary tracking to worksite supervision and follow-up.
Structural and geotechnical monitoring for the Ana Tower construction project
SIXENSE is part of a unique office building project, built on an urban land with an area of 3250 sq m, with 3 underground levels, ground floor, 24 floors and a technical floor with an over ground area of approximately 33,650 m2 that is in the heart of Bucharest. Ana Tower is the highest office building under development in Bucharest.
Our romanian team is instrumenting and monitoring the new building. Our integrated structural and geotechnical monitoring services enabled the client to reduce the risks associated with the construction and operation of the new building. We undertook continuous monitoring of the site and we implemented leading technologies specific to this project requirements.
During the execution of the construction, measurements of geometric levelling, inclinometric and piezometric measurements were done by the specialists of SIXENSE. The main purpose of monitoring the projects time behaviour is to bring clarifications in connection with: verifying the validity of design assumptions; identifying the differences between real field conditions and design assumptions and making sure that we offer specific solutions dedicated to statistically improving the safety and optimising risk management during construction of civil engineering structures.
ANA TOWER is going to be a very high energy-efficient building with an innovative design of structural networks. This unique project through the scale and technical solutions adapted to its construction was made possible with the implication of Strabag.
Tarnava Bridge monitoring
Tarnava Bridge, ROMANIA
SIXENSE Romania was very pleased to be part of such a large scale project, having the opportunity to monitor Tarnava Bridge, component of Pan European Corridor IV.
FCC contracted SIXENSE Romania services for the instrumentation and monitoring of the Tarnava Bridge, during its execution following up to the test procedure to ensure that the construction is suitable for a normal operation, assessment of conditions for the prevention of incidents, accidents and damages, namely the reduction of material damage, loss of life and degradation of the environment. So that the construction monitoring actions are carried out to meet the provisions on maintaining the resistance, stability and sustainability requirements of the construction to be accomplished as well and for maintaining resistance and stability.
Also, the purpose of monitoring the projects time behaviour is to bring clarifications in connection with: verifying the validity of design assumptions; identifying the differences between real field conditions and design assumptions.
Upon finalizing of the construction of the new, state of the art Tarnava Bridge, SIXENSE Romania took part on 15th of April of 2019, for the final load test prior to the opening for service of the bridge. The tests performed were both static and dynamic, the latter involving the monitoring of the bridge’s structural behaviour by aid of interconnected chains of strain gauges sensors installed on the diagonals, seismic sensor installed in the middle of the bridge and displacement meter installed on the extremity of the structure, during the test procedures using the convoys.
SIXENSE would like to congratulate its partner, FCC Construccion on developing such a masterpiece in Romania and nonetheless its entire teams that put on a tremendous work along the years the bridge has been under construction and thus, monitoring.
Real-time monitoring for the preservation of historical monuments
SIXENSE carried out the instrumentation and monitoring for the Guadalajara Metro, including one tunnel, 5 stations and all buildings situated above-ground along the route. The Mexican Transport and Communications Ministry initiated this real-time monitoring requirement in order to observe and better preserve its historical monuments. SIXENSE teams’ added-value was adopted at design stage when we proposed a complete inspection scheme. Both involved and responsive, our site teams completed the installation of all of the automatic instrumentation of the buildings concerned, while the tunnel-boring machine was still active.
Reference geometrical as-built document for the high-speed railway LGV SEA by LiDAR technique
The project for the high speed LGV SEA (Ligne Grande Vitesse – Sud Europe Atlantique) covers 350 km and over 5500 ha of worksites. The as-built documentation is an important part of the French DOE (Dossier des Ouvrages Exécutés – Final documentation package).
The timing and importance of the project meant that usual processes had to be adapted, which is why SIXENSE chose to undertake the whole as-built documentation creation using LiDAR acquisition techniques and aerial photogrammetry. From the images, data and the 3D point clouds, we digitised the whole project in 3D, in dwg format and in exact accordance with the specification.
The MuCEM opts for SIXENSE… until 2023
The MuCEM, a true architectural masterpiece, is already one of the world’s 50 most visited museums. The structure of the mineral cube is surrounded by fine concrete latticework and branching posts that required preservation. The SIXENSE teams worked in synergy to secure the 6-year Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) structure inspection and monitoring contract. Visual inspections, undertaken by drone, are performed in addition to topographic surveys, instrumentation and dynamic damper measurements. To inspect the access walkways, a dedicated mobile inspection platform was developed.
SIXENSE mobilised on the Grand Paris Express project
Paris region, FRANCE
SIXENSE was appointed by the Horizon Joint Venture (Bouygues TP – Soletanche Bachy) to carry out the investigations for the future metro Line 15 / South, on the T2A section between Créteil l’Echât station and Villejuif Louis Aragon station. This section includes 4 stations and 8 sensitive infrastructures adjacent to the site. Three tunnel-boring machines will be necessary to excavate the 6.6 km-long twin-track tunnel (Ø 8.7 m) and 1.1 km- long single-track tunnel (Ø 6.7 m). This vast project requires a broad spectrum of monitoring solutions during the four-year-long construction programme.
Brest: Silos in question…
In order to confirm the viability of using its silos for another 20 or 30 years, the Brest International Chamber of Commerce asked SIXENSE to undertake a diagnosis of the structures and propse forward recommendations to guarantee the Silo’s integrity and sustainability. All 8 silos, built in 1982, are exceptional buildings: 51 metres-high and 13 metres-wide on the inside. SIXENSE conducted visual inspection operations, with, for the outside, a combination of manual and drone inspections and on the inside rope access engineers.
SIXENSE also undertook diagnosis of the reinforced concrete and a survey on the pretension.
To create a 3D model, our teams set up a geometrical and mechanical silo monitoring system by using a CYCLOPS robotic total station during a filling and emptying operation. Finally, we undertook a 3D scan of the silos to georeference them and check their verticality.
SIXENSE secured the instrumentation and monitoring contract for the preliminary enabling works on the Melbourne Metro project. The construction works for the enabling package consist of excavating two 40-metre-deep wells in the town-centre, close to sensitive buildings and monuments.
Considering the above, an entirely automatic solution was specified and SIXENSE installed a network of wireless sensors, for geotechnical, topographical and environmental measurements. Our Geoscope platform was used to collate data and produce reports.
Purple Line: an automated solution for worksite monitoring
Washington DC, ETATS-UNIS
The Purple Line is a 26 km-long light rail line, with 21 stations, that is destined to improve transport around the capital city of Washington DC. SIXENSE secured the contract to be in charge of the monitoring of a tunnel, a deep-well and all noises and vibrations along the route.
Even though most specifications were based on manual studies, SIXENSE chose to propose a totally automated monitoring system. It’s a safer solution as it avoids teams being present on busy sites and it offers better results in the form of real-time monitoring and improved -reactivity to site monitoring alarms.
